Whether your music venue of choice is is a local park or a packed arena, these findings confirm that music can boost your mood and reduce stress. When was the last time you saw live music? That doesn\u2019t have to mean a trip to your nearest stadium for a wildly expensive stage show\u2014it could be seeing someone with a guitar at the coffee shop, a jazz quartet at the farmers market, or a recital at a school. Their findings, done with help from a researcher named Patrick Fagan, from <a class=\"external-link\" title=\"(opens new window)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gold.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-describedby=\"external-disclaimer\">Goldsmiths University<\/a>, show that seeing live music can contribute to these <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhg.com\/health-family\/mind-body-spirit\/think-positively\/\">positive mental feelings<\/a> more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhg.com\/health-family\/fitness\/yoga-for-core-strength\/\">activities like yoga<\/a>or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhg.com\/syndication\/petting-your-cat-or-dog-relieves-stress\/\">spending time with a dog<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"div-sm-highImpact\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph\">\n<p>It&#8217;s worth noting that O2 has a vested interest in promoting its own business, but that doesn\u2019t mean the study is inaccurate. <a class=\"external-link\" title=\"(opens new window)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/rocking-out-to-live-music-linked-to-reduced-levels-of-stress-hormone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-describedby=\"external-disclaimer\">A 2016 study<\/a>published in the journal <em>Public Health <\/em>found that seeing live music can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhg.com\/health-family\/mind-body-spirit\/stress-relief\/stress-management-tips\/\">reduce levels of cortisol and cortisone<\/a>, stress hormones released by the body\u2019s adrenal glands. Lower levels of those stress hormones mean <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhg.com\/health-family\/mind-body-spirit\/stress-relief\/erase-stress-for-good\/\">less stress<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph\">\n<p><a class=\"external-link\" title=\"(opens new window)\" href=\"https:\/\/content.iospress.com\/articles\/journal-of-alzheimers-disease\/jad151106\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-describedby=\"external-disclaimer\">Another study<\/a> published in the <em>Journal of Alzheimer&#8217;s Disease<\/em> looked specifically at older adults, and found that listening to music can have all kinds of benefits, ranging from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhg.com\/health-family\/conditions\/sleep\/sleep-when-stressed\/\">reduction in stress to better-quality sleep<\/a>and a more positive mood. A 2017 study tested subjects\u2019 subjective well-being\u2014essentially a survey to judge how a person is feeling about themselves. <a class=\"external-link\" title=\"(opens new window)\" href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/0305735616659552\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-describedby=\"external-disclaimer\">That study found<\/a> that engaging in music with others, for example at a concert or by dancing, has a notably positive effect on the way people feel. (We have to agree: There&#8217;s not much better than dancing with your girlfriends while listening to your favorite musician on stage!)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph\">\n<p>Again, there\u2019s no particular music or type of music experience associated with this research. Going to see a concert in the park, watching a band perform at a restaurant or winery\u2014that all counts. It\u2019s the act of experiencing music with other people that seems to matter most\u2014so <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhg.com\/syndication\/women-should-go-out-with-their-girlfriends-twice-a-week-according-to-research\/\">call your crew<\/a> and get those tickets!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Good news for concertgoers!
